Uncommon Sense Awards

General Awards

Idea! Uncommon Sense Award #4 goes to the folks in charge of the WindyCon XXV t-shirts for coming up with the brilliant idea to include the entire known guestlist on the back of the shirt, and to Steven Silver for getting that list into their hands. It looks terrific, and all by itself it sold at least two copies of that shirt. Let's all give these people a round of applause for making a popular souvenir even more appropriate and popular. I'd like to encourage a repetition of the phenomenon.

Uncommon Sense Award #4 was issued November, 1998, in conjunction with a review of WindyCon XXV.

Publisher Awards

Idea! Uncommon Sense Award #1 goes to Inner Traditions International, a publishing group with eight imprints, for their top-quality catalog and service. Everything is there in readily accessible form: detailed coverage of new titles first, followed by blurbs for recent titles, then a complete backlist and an index of titles and authors. Full information on distributors, sales reps, and orders appears in the back. Print, layout, and pictures are crystal-clear. Both Pandora and I have found their service speedy and good.

Uncommon Sense Award #1 was issued in conjunction with a review published June 3, 1996, in Cauldrons and Broomsticks.

Idea! Uncommon Sense Award #2 goes to Phoenix Publishing, Inc. for their resourcefulness with review copies. They sent me a number of slightly-damaged books, copies not suitable for sale but perfectly readable -- some had creased covers, dented spines, that sort of thing. Most publishers destroy damaged copies; using them for review copies not only reduces waste but cost as well, since the publisher need not give away saleable merchandise.

Idea! Uncommon Sense Award #3 goes to Eschaton Books for their nifty inclusions. They sent me a whole box of books; inside each review copy I found a well-written press release, a postcard you can send in to get on Eschaton's mailing list, and a bookmark. The bookmark has "Eschaton" written on one side and a list of current titles on the other, complete with ordering information. They really make it easy to track down their other books, and I don't have to use scrap paper to mark my place. I also have about a dozen postcards to give to Pagan friends. Cheers!

Uncommon Sense Award #3 was issued in conjunction with a review published August 23, 1996, in Cauldrons and Broomsticks.
