My mother read me The Hobbit when I was four years old, and by third grade I was reading through The Lord of the Rings on my own. My sense of wonder has always led me to explore magic and science in roughly equal proportions, which baffles some people but serves me well in my chosen career.
I have studied ancient religions, mythology, and assorted sciences for many years. I graduated from the University of Illinois with a Rhetoric major and a Women's Studies minor. I won my first prize money for writing in high school -- $100 for an environmental essay contest. I made my first sale (an invocation) to SageWoman magazine, and since then I have broken into paying publication with articles, ritual and invocational material, poetry, reviews, and (finally!) fiction. In fact, I received acceptance letters for my first and second story sales on the very same day: "The Travelers' Tree" to the webzine E-scape and "Hatred Is Not A Family Value" to the anthology Abrupt Darkness. I favor speculative fiction, with an emphasis on science fiction and fantasy; my other fields include New Age/Pagan, alternative sexualities/erotica/gender studies, and intentional communities.
Right now I have a number of regular slots, including the column "Into the Green" for SageWoman and "Book Reviews from Hypatia's Hoard" for the e-zines Spicy Green Iguana and Eternity Online; I also do freelance reviews for Age of Wonder and Terra Incognita. Besides that, I continue to publish assorted pieces in a wide variety of markets, with my main F&SF appearances in Hadrosaur Tales, Fantastic Realms, HMS Beagle, Dark Planet (poetry), Heliocentric Network, Creatio ex Nihilo (articles), and Fortress (short fiction). "A Steed of Steel and Silver" appeared in the Mindsparks Science Fiction Poetry Anthology and my short story "Did You Get Your Answers Questioned?" in the Circlet Press anthology Genderflex.
Watch for more of my reviews, poetry, articles, and other material in Eternity Online and Pulp Eternity. My major Eternity project is a series of articles matching the theme of each Pulp Eternity issue, beginning with "The History of Time Travel in Science Fiction" for the premier. This article will explore classic time travel motifs (such as the time machine and the grandfather clause) as they emerge in science fiction novels and short stories. It will also look at some classic errors committed by writers.
Anyone wanting to track down some of my other work is welcome to contact me for a list of currently available pieces. I enjoy public speaking and often participate in panels at SF/Fantasy conventions, on topics ranging from alternative religions & lifestyles to xenolinguistics (the study and/or creation of alien and/or invented languages). Favorite pastimes include white-water rafting on the stream of consciousness and suspension-of-disbelief bungee-jumping.
